Data Migration Assistant

Situation & challenge

When: 2016
Company: Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise (C&E)
My role: Lead designer

The goal of Data Migration Assistant is to make it easier for Database Administrators to assess their data before migrating to a newer version of SQL or to SQL Server on Azure. Immediately after switching to C&E, I stepped into the process at the critical time a few months before shipping.

Tasks

  • Finish all of the missing scenarios
  • Coordinate with the Program Managers, Engineering Manager, and Engineering team

Action

  • Attended daily scrum with the entire engineering team and Program Managers to ensure design was not a blocker.
  • Collaborated with the Content Designer on the User Voice experience
  • Completed all of the missing scenarios, icons, and redlines.
  • Sat with the engineers and walked through any design gaps. I am an advocate for ensuring collaborative work and communication between design and engineering. Great work happens in this space.

Results

  • What went well
    • Product shipped!
    • First accessible product within C&E based upon Microsoft’s new accessibility requirements.
  • My learnings
    • This was my first piece of software that I shipped. I quickly learned that planned updates are part of the process. Unlike games, where it’s critical for studios to “get it right the first time”, SAAS is about continuous improvement and support.
