Data Migration Guide

Situation & challenge

When: 2017
Company: Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise (C&E)
My role: Lead designer

One of the greatest challenges of migrating data to the cloud is the plethora of tools, however, there was no single source of truth. The Data Migration Guide provides that  single, necessary point of reference with step-by-step process for the Database Administrator performing the actual pre-migration, migration, and post-migration specific to the unique source and target data platforms. Furthermore, the Data Migration Guide provided a list of partners specific to their migration scenario and who could perform the migration instead.

Tasks

  • Finish the public preview version of the website end-to-end
  • Coordinate with the Program Manager, Engineering Manager, and Engineering team
  • Utilize and integrate Microsoft’s Web Framework (MWF) system design

Action

  • Brainstormed the end-to-end product with the Program Manager.
  • Spearheaded the use and of the MWF system design.
  • Connected the Engineering team with the MWF team to ensure proper application of the system design.
  • Designed an experience that worked with the MWF system design.
  • Created animation demos for the Engineering team’s reference.
  • Wrote HTML/CSS for the print version of the Data Migration Guide.

Results

  • Product shipped to public preview, before I moved off of this product and onto Azure’s Big Data offering: Azure Data Lake.
  • Second accessible product within C&E based upon Microsoft’s new accessibility requirements.
