Wanapum Turbine Replacement Team

Summary

When: 2004
Company: Grant County Public Utility District (GCPUD)
My role: Student Helper operating as Clerical Support

This was an impetus for my technical interests. At that time, I was considering mechanical engineering as a field of study. Today, I attribute much of my mental organization, extreme attention to detail, program management, development, and processes with the skills learned at Hydro – projects where human and wildlife safety is at risk, and where regions and states source their power.

As a student, I had the opportunity of working at the Hydroelectric Engineering Administration of the Grant County Public Utility District. After two summers, there was a vacancy on the Wanapum Turbine Replacement Team, and, as a Student Helper, I had the opportunity to fill the role and responsibilities during the summer of 2004.

I provided clerical support for a team comprised of four engineers, three inspectors, an engineering technician, a Contracting Officer, and several consultants. The team was responsible for overseeing the parts manufacturing and installation of the Advanced Turbine Project. I maintained digital copies and an electronic archival database of physical drawing records, technical documents, and correspondence logs. The work was detail oriented and had a large backlog that began nine months previously. I reduced the backlog while maintaining the current work. Inspection reports came from four manufacturing facilities throughout the globe and arrived in various formats. I maintained the documentations for inspectors and engineers while they were traveling. Furthermore, I prepared for the full-time employee who succeeded me at the end of the summer when I returned to the University of Washington.
